2009 Rising Stars Scholarship Contest

Community Music School’s second annual Rising Stars Scholarship Contest has begun! All Western New York students in grades 6-12 can enter for a chance to win FREE music lessons at CMS!

To enter, just write a short essay (150-500 words) describing your personal connection to music. We want to know why you love music, why you are passionate about music, why music is important to you. You could write about your personal experiences with music, your reasons for wanting to study music, your goals as a musician or something totally different.

Essays should be typed and double-spaced. Entries should include a cover page with your name, contact information (home address, e-mail and phone), teacher, school (with address) and grade. It is important for judging reasons that no personal information (name, school, etc.) is revealed on/in the actual essay.

Submit your entry in one of the following ways:
  • Mail it to Community Music School, 415 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14222
  • Drop it off at our Elmwood location
  • E-mail it to cms.info@verizon.net attached as a Microsoft Word document
  • Fax it to 884-7529
  • Entries must be received by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

One winner will receive a full scholarship for weekly 30-minute individual music lessons at Community Music School until the end of June. One runner-up will receive a half scholarship. We offer lessons in many areas of music – piano, voice, guitar, strings, drums, woodwinds, brass, fiddling, jazz, composition, music theory and many more! Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced musician, our professional teachers will help your talent grow and develop.

If you have any questions, please contact Alex Nelson at anelson2@buffalo.edu.

85th Anniversary Celebrated with Gala

We celebrated our 85th anniversary on Thursday, May 27 with a Gala Dinner at Salvatore's Italian Gardens.

We presented CMS Legacy Awards to conductor and pianist John Landis, opera singer and artist-teacher Genia Las and jazz musician Bobby Militello. In addition, special recognition went to Kenneth Atkinson who has retired as Chair of the CMS Piano Department after a record 32 years. The smiling award winners

are pictured below at the end of a wonderful evening filled with great food, excellent music by faculty and students, accolades for the School and award winners and terrific auction items.

We would like to thank M&T Bank - our Anniversary Sponsor, the companies and organizations that purchased Patron Tables, the donors and businesses who provided auction prizes, the fabulous musicians who entertained us, the guests who joined us for this special occasion and Stratton Rawson for serving as our Master of Ceremonies. We were so pleased with the kind words offered by Vic Chiodo on behalf of the Chromatic Club of Buffalo, our founding organization together with Welcome Hall Social Settlement.
